Hippodrome de Longchamps

We would like to see some horseracing in Paris when we visit in May. I believe the horses will be at Longchamps. We are staying in the 16th arrondisement. Can we walk? Or take the metro? Any suggestions on betting?

I suppose you could walk to LONGCHAMP from some neighborhoods of the 16eme (what will your street address be?). You can walk to the race course from the PORTE d%26#39;AUTEUIL station of the #10 Metro ligne or take the #241 public bus (heading in the direction of Reuil-Malmaison) the few stops to Longschamps. The bus stop for the #241 bus will by reight across from the Porte d%26#39;Auteuil Metro EXIT.

There is also the #244 public bus route (heading in the direction of Reuil-Malmaison) from PORTE MAILLOT (#1 Metro ligne), which cuts diagonally through Bois de Boulgne and would be a pleasant ride to Longchamp. The bus stop for the #244 bus is just west of Place de la Porte Maillot, on the other side of the Périphérique at rue Joseph et Marie Hackin at Blvd André Maurois. If you ride the First Car of the #1 Metro train, you should come out of the Metro EXIT, just across the street from the #244 bus stop.

I have been out to Longchamp a few times, it is a nice walk up rue Passy and through the Bois de Boulogne, about 45 minutes or an hour from the Passy Metro stop.

The racing, except on big days like l%26#39;Arc de Triomphe in early October, is ok, not great, not crowded. The crowd is generally what you might see at a thorobred meet in the US on a weekday -- very much %26quot;regulars,%26quot; with a similar ambiance and rhythm to the day. The betting is similar, and the clerks are helpful in sorting out your bets with you; the machines are difficult. Try the %26quot;jumele place,%26quot; a kind of forgiving exacta where you have to pick two out of the top three finishers -- i.e., you get paid if your two horses finish 2-3.

Longchamp is a good way to wile away a few pleasant hours on a sunny afternoon, but not a top attraction, in my opinion.
