TGV questions again!

We will be in Paris for three days and then plan to travel from there south. Is it ok to wait until we are there to buy TGV tickets to Avignon? We plan on renting a car in Avignon but will arrange the car rental before we leave U.S. From all I read here and elsewhere it seems like buying these tickets on line from home can be difficult or at least complicated. My daughter is living in France now and says we should wait...looking for a second opinion!

yes. It is ok to wait unless it is peak travel time at high season (eg July/August).

Yes you can wait but they are cheaper if you buy them on line. If your daughter is in France she should buy them on line direct on the French web site, I think you have to pay with a French credit card.

It depends on when you%26#39;re going. If you go to the sncf-voyages website, there is an icon for iDTGV. I bought my tickets online from the U.S. and got a fare of 50 Euros total for my daughter and I, Paris to Aix in June. That was about a third the price of everything else I checked. I was able to book, pay for and ticket right from home. Easy! The key to the best prices, though, is booking ahead. Let me know what happens!

When you say %26quot;we,%26quot; if there are two of you travelling together that usually entitles you to a discount on the train tickets.

If money is no object then by all means wait. However you can get some outstanding deals on tickets by simply booking them on the internet in advance. You could easily save 100 euros per person round trip. Search for my name and you will find a step by step guide to buying train tickets that should be of help.

ACtually, buying tickets online is not necessarily complicated on the SNCF website..They have an English version,I believe..or used to...That is a busy and popular route out of Paris to Avignon...There are the same types of advance purchase discounts available as we find in the US with slightly different time frames which are evident on the website. One of them is the thirty day advance purchase price...probably the biggest discount of all as I do not think you can buy them more than sixty days before your train trip at all online...Then there is a fourteen day advance purchase which is smaller discount, and there are sales and promotions just as we have here...Plus, if there are two of you doing a roundtrip together on the same itinerary, such as a married couple, then there is a decouverte a deux discount that is available sometimes...We saved a bundle buying our tix this way...just paid with American credit card online and picked up the tickets at the train station in Paris..at least twenty minutes before departure..an hour even better...pas de probleme....DO take the exact credit card you paid with because they will want to see it as part of the identification process...I also took the printout of our reservation confirmation...The savings might afford you a first class seat or an extra good dinner in Provence...Do not be afraid about not having your tix here in the states...They are waiting for you in France...You%26#39;ll click France for the pickup site...You can buy them in Paris, of course, but I think it%26#39;ll probably cost more ...all things being equal...Good luck..
