Visiting the south of France, have 1 day to look around. Mostly interested in visiting Rennes Le Chateau approx 40-50 km south but want to stay at a hotel near a larger city that is safe, approx 100euros/night and easy to find (will be driving at night from Toulouse Airport). Many options on search engines, any danger in staying near Medieval City - ie Mercure Porte de la Cite?

best western le donjon at bestwestern.com ---- the best I saw and somewhat affordable and worth every penney. Is inside the city walls in a colorful pedestrian zone and is safe too.

I stayed at the Château des Ducs de Joyeuse in Couiza

It is very close to Renne le Chateau. Couiza is a medium size town but you also have many other towns within 5 to 10 mins in both directions such as Limoux, Alet les Bains etc. So there is a selection of restaurants etc if you have a car. It%26#39;s safe. I also recommend visiting the Chateau d%26#39;Arques. Its a small cathar castle in a lovely valley and is close by.

When are you planning to visit the area? You will probably find that the Chateau Duc Joyeuse is closed until Easter.
As to safety, I would consider the entire Aude region, especially the Haute vallee, where Rennes le Chateau is located, to be extremely safe in all respects.
