Menton area day trips

Hello from St. Louis...new to TA.

We will be 4 women in rental house in Menton for 2 weeks April 22 to May 6. We will have car and intend to do many day trips. Have been to many perched hill villages in France, and want to do some exploring in Italy.

Understand Nice has great antique market so we will hit that. We like castles, history, cathedrals, old charming villages, bits of antiques and minimal real $$$ shopping. (2 are antiquers 2 are not so moderate on that part LOL)

We will be doing a lot of cooking in evening so local markets/wines will be very important.

Should we plan to do the famous Italian cinq villages by train vs car?

We have spent small amount time in area but never this quality or amount so all hints/tips are appreciated.

You have Eze-Village, La Turbie, Roquebrune and Gorbio that re quite close to Menton.

If you want to go further up in the mountains, I suggest you follow the path of the Train des Merveilles that goes up the Alps towards Tende then Torino in Italy. Villages worth seeing are Peille, Peillon, Touet L%26#39;Escarène, Fontan and Saorge. You can also drive to Breil-sur-Roya then Sospel then come back along the Italian border to Vintimille.

Italy is easier by train, less trouble, no worries.

I´d especially recommend Saorge, my favourite

French village and beautiful in early spring with the snow-covered mountains and the wild scenery. Visit the Monastere Franciscain on

top of the village for more views. Also, to

experience some less spoiled coastal views, go to Ste. Agnes behind Menton and continue

along the small road to Peille. Have a nice

trip - it´s a lovely time to visit the area.
