Possible Delta Airline Pilots Strike?

Should I be worried about the flights this month?

I should not worry about flights this month. Certainly there is no point to threatening a strike unless everyone believes that it will indeed come to pass but I believe there remains several steps in the process yet to occur before any actual shut down takes place (probably several weeks worth). With so much at stake, I predict a compromising resolution will be found. If not, there is no point to even worry as the resulting chaos, affecting thousands of people, will leave us with no other option than to drive to granny%26#39;s house for vacation.

Because of the various deadlines, mediation schedules, %26quot;cooling off periods%26quot; and so forth in US labor negotiations, I recently read in a financial publication here in the US that the earliest %26quot;Possible%26quot; strike date for Delta would not be until April 14th.

The Delta pilots union rejected the airline%26#39;s last offer, and the matter has now been turned over to %26quot;binding%26quot; arbitration. The arbitration meetings are scheduled to begin Monday, 13Mar06, and will last as long as they last. The airline wants the arbitrators to void the current contract, and the pilots threaten that if the contract is voided that they will strike.

There is a mandatory 30-day cooling off period after the arbitrator%26#39;s decision (but the pilots are arguing that that may not apply to them). In any case, it is HIGHLY unlikey that anything major will happen before mid-April at the very earliest.

The Northwest Airlines pilot%26#39;s union resolved their dispute with that airline, and that may put pressure on Delta%26#39;s pilots to do the same (thus avoiding the whole strike issue altogether).

Negotiations between the Delta pilot%26#39;s union and Delta may (and probably will) continue even during the arbitration meetings.
