The Metro

What is the difference between the Metro and the RER? Are they both subways? Do they connect?

The Metro is the subway, the RER is the suburban light rail system. The RER cars are larger and make less stops within the city. They are underground in the city and connect into the metro system. A standard metro ticket is all you need and you may transfer to/ from the RER on the same ticket. If you leave the city limits on the RER things get a bit tricky as you may enter zone 3 which requires a higher fare ticket. When you use the RER you need your ticket both when you board and when you exit the RER so keep it handy.
