My family will be in Montpellier in mid March and will have a car and a few free days. How far is it to travel to Spain, maybe to the coast or Barcelona? How long would it take by car or is there a better way, such as train.

By car, Barcelona is under 3 hours from Montpellier, but the border itself is under 2 hours.
I often take my visitors on a day trip :
A9 to Perpignan
Perpignan to coast road
Follow coast road to Cadaques (very scenic)
Visit Port Legat (Dali%26#39;s house)
Empuria Brava (Phoenician/Greek/Roman city excavations)
Figueres (Dali museum + shopping)
Return via autoroute to Montpellier
It is a full day, but worthwhile.
