What does TA call the 9th as a neighborhood?

When searching the hotel listings and using the $100-200 range setting the engine provides a neighborhood selection option. It appears as though the 9th is not one of the specific choices. Am I incorrect about this? If I am missing the choice, would someone correct me please.

The lower portion of the 9eme is frequently referred to as GRAND BOULEVARDS / OPERA / MADELEINE (singly or in combination) The upper portion is sometimes referred to as PIGALLE. There%26#39;s nothing wrong with the lower portions of the 9eme...but things tend get a little %26#39;seedy%26#39; up towards ther PIGALLE neighborhoods (nothing inherently terrible or dangerous) and out toward the border with the 10eme and the neighborhood nearer to Gare du Nord and Gare d%26#39;Est. But there are some pleasant little spots up here--Square d%26#39;Anvers for one.

When you are checking out hotels, it%26#39;s always a good idea to have a good Paris streetmap handy (STREETWISE PARIS is great for general planning and touring purposes) to find the relative locations to the things and places of Paris that are important to you. You can almost always find an exact street location for a hotel by enterring the name or address into the PagesJaunes mapping site-- http://www.pagesjaunes.fr/pj.cgi?lang=en

It looks like %26quot;Pigalle%26quot; nets you the 9th... among the choices are Opera Cadet, Langlois, Trois Poussins and Chopin...

There could be some %26#39;crossover%26#39;, in that you might see the same hotels under %26quot;Pigalle%26quot; and %26quot;Opera%26quot;, as KDKS was saying...

Actually, the upper 9th is more Montmartre than Pigalle. Big difference in my opinion.

|||

sorry, mascara, but Montmartre is defined as the %26#39;butte%26#39; fully within the 18th arrondissement, roughly between Abbesses and Caulaincourt...

I agree the area -below- Pigalle is much nicer than Pigalle itself, but it isn%26#39;t %26#39;Montmartre%26#39;.

We are only assigning the %26quot;label%26quot; that TA uses for the hotel list, not the actual geographic location/designation. If you wanted to see what hotels TA lists in the 9th, your choices are %26#39;Opera%26#39; or %26#39;Pigalle%26#39;. The hotels I listed that fall under TA%26#39;s label %26#39;Pigalle%26#39; are in the nice area of the 9th. If you dropped down %26#39;Montmartre%26#39; on TA%26#39;s list, you%26#39;d get hotels in the 18th - the OP wanted hotels in the 9th.

Of course I know the difference between the 9th and the 18th. However depending on the AREA of the 9th that is close to Montmartre, I would not go so far as to imply it is like Pigalle. You can walk down r. Lepic from r. Abbesses (18th) and get to Bvd. de Clichy and then cross over to the opposite side of the street and that is considered the 9th. We are talking about one block here. If you travel down Bvd. de Clichy towards what is really considered the Pigalle, it gets much more seedy. That is my point.

|||

yes, we agree on the actuality...

but the question was, what area does TripAdvisor call the 9th (for hotels) and the answer is %26#39;Pigalle%26#39;. Drop down the list and you%26#39;ll see what I mean.

what mascara and I are both saying is, don%26#39;t pick a hotel *right* around actual Pigalle.. but the streets running south of that area are fine, similar to the quaint/nice parts of Montmarte... at least, that%26#39;w what I think we are both saying!

Exactement Travel Nutty!!

|||

REGARDLESS of what area(s) or which hotel(s) you are considering, take the time and make the effort to find its RELATIVE LOCATION within the city--and those places and things which interest and attract you--on a good Paris street map. As has been noted by all, there are cross-overs, over-laps and ambiguities between GENERAL areas of the city and neighborhoods within them. More often than not, convenient LOCATION matters.

Thanks all. I too think of Pigalle as seedy. I didn%26#39;t think TA would have listed the 9th as Pigalle but indeed they do.

Merci

Actually the %26quot;upper 9th%26quot; (the area around Saint Georges and Pigalle) is much more upscale and less %26quot;seedy%26quot; than the %26quot;lower 9th%26quot; (beginning of rue du Faubourg Montmartre, around métros Grands Boulevards and Cadet).
