Hate to Ask... the attire question..but HELP!

First trip to Paris- turning 40- with husband. We live in the mountains near Lake Tahoe in No.CA and our lifestyle as teachers and mountain parents does not require %26#39;tres chic%26#39; wardrobes- and now with only ten days to go - we suddenly are concerned about looking like your typical Americans (not that it%26#39;s bad- but we would like to feel as though we blend a little!)Looking for tips on attire (are jeans ok?Uggs?) Any and all feedback is very much appreciated! HELP!!!

avec merci-

Jeans are fine. Parisians wear jeans. Usually they are of the no-holes variety, but jeans are just fine.

Your wardrobe will be fine. What will make you stand out mostly would be sportswear, tennis shoes, flannel shirts, tee shirts, baseball caps. Otherwise I%26#39;m sure your wardrobe will do just fine in Paris!

Just like Les said, wear your jeans but avoid the sportswear. But do make sure you take a scarf. Wrap it around your neck about six times and you%26#39;ll fit right in.

jeans are really ok especially if they have a nice fit and color, uggs not really but it used to be fashion a while ago, like les said avoir baseball things huge t shirts etc and youll be fine, anyway you ARE a tourist so its not a big deal to look like one (when i go to the us most of the people notice im a tourist without opening my mouth).

Jeans are almost a national uniform these days and Uggs are quite in. Loud obnoxious behaviour is what makes visitors stand out, otherwise we are rather oblivious, so pack what is comfortable, being sure to bring two pairs of walking shoes and you will have a grand time.

You did say any and all feedback.

My opinion is if you aren%26#39;t going to dress nicely in Paris than where in the world would you dress nicely?

My folks live in Tahoe and that attire really is out of place for Paris. Tourists do dress in college and team sweatshirts and jeans in Paris. If that is how you really want to dress than go for it. Part of the Parisian experience for me is the chicness and style. You don%26#39;t have to compromise comfort. I pack all black clothing, one pant, one skirt, black boots, colorful scarfs and a black wool cape. We just returned from a trip with a big group. Many of them wore jeans. They were fine, but did feel like they were limited on where they could go and what they could do. When you land at the airport you will be suprised to see how much the women dress.

Thanks! What about attire for restaurants and Jazz clubs? We will not being doing any fine dining but have reservations at Bofinger and Le Coupe Chou. (Too bad about the ball caps- often helps a bad hair day!!! LOL)

I%26#39;ve always wanted to wear a bowler (see pic :) We%26#39;ll be in London the week prior to Paris so may try to find one... Of course, think I%26#39;d have to have one of those long black umbrellas, too. Would I need a cape?

Hiya Stephanie!

Nevermind what KDKsail said, she needs to turn down the sarcasm knob a bit! ;-)

I understand your question perfectly, you like a certain style and comfort at home, and merely want to know if you can make it work in Paris. I could see by your original post that you were willing to make changes if your normal style would be too out of place. If you didn%26#39;t care, you wouldn%26#39;t have asked in the first place.

Anyway, my best advice is to not care what other people think, it%26#39;s a prison. But, if you WANT to do as in Rome, I suggest black black black. Polyester or nylon dress slacks in black (like one wears nowadays with a suit), a nice long sleeve blouse or warm turtleneck, in neutral or dark colors, a black leather jacket, and a chunky scarf. Oh, and black leather walking shoes. Non lace up. A loafer perhaps. That%26#39; all you need! Buy two of everything and wear them to death, nobody will see you twice! :-)

When are you going to Paris? That makes a difference on what to wear, as you%26#39;ll need to be concerned with the temperature.

Have your husband take a sportcoat with and you%26#39;ll be fine for any restaurant. For yourself, a black pantsuit (or jacket and pants) will work well with the addition of a colored scarf. Jeans...well, we saw them primarily on students, and our friends who live in Provence don%26#39;t wear them. Also, they%26#39;re heavy to pack; so think about taking something a bit lighter.

We live just below Sacramento, where people also don%26#39;t dress up much. But we noticed that quite a few Parisians pay more attention to their clothes.
